Two hikers are safe after getting lost in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park earlier this week.

According to the Thunder Bay OPP, officers located the pair shortly before midnight on Tuesday after they became disoriented while hiking to the Giant. As darkness fell, the hikers lost their bearings and their cellphone batteries died.

Before their phones stopped working, the hikers were able to send a message to family members, who then contacted 911. Family members were also able to provide a last known location to emergency responders.

OPP officers travelled into the area using ATVs and located the hikers. Police say the pair had remained close to the location they had shared with family, helping searchers find them quickly and safely.

“If something really goes wrong and you get lost, stay in one place,” said OPP Constable Tom Armstrong in a social media post Thursday afternoon.

Armstrong reminded anyone heading into the backcountry to plan ahead before setting out. Carry offline maps, GPS devices or paper maps, along with basic emergency supplies such as food, water, shelter and fire-starting equipment.

Police also advise telling someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
