Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Mary Simon will be the 30th Governor General of Canada.
An Inuk leader from Nunavik, Quebec, Simon is the first Indigenous person to serve the role.
“Today after 154 years, our country takes a historic step, I cannot think of a better person to meet the moment,” said Trudeau.
The announcement was made at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., on Tuesday morning.
Simon’s predecessor Julie Payette stepped down from the role in January.
