Alstom is temporarily trimming down the workforce at its Thunder Bay plant.
Between 250 and 300 workers will be laid off beginning on March 18th with the plant recalling some individuals beginning at the end of August 2022.
Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Judith Monteith-Farrell indicated that there would only be 75 workers until the fall of 2022.
“Our community has been hit by layoffs that could have been prevented,” said Monteith-Farrell. “I’m worried for the Alstom workers and families who have had their future thrown into jeopardy. And I’m angry that just six months ago, Doug Ford stood at this plant and declared to the workers that their jobs were safe when he wasn’t going to act on that promise. It’s heartbreaking for these workers, who now have to figure out how to keep the bills paid while they’re laid off.”
In a statement to Acadia News, Union spokesperson Dominic Pasqualino stated that everyone will be recalled by March 2023.
The plant is set to begin construction on 60 Light Rail Vehicles for the Toronto Transit Commission and refurbish 94 rail coaches for GO Transit beginning in September.
