There is a new way for locals to find great food grown close to home.
Thunder Bay and Area Food Strategy has officially launches their “What’s In Season” series.
The 12 month campaign will focus around monthly cooking videos featuring local chefs cooking with local ingredients.
There is also a directory which provides people the opportunity to search for local producers and growers by category and ingredients, along with other businesses in the city processing, retailing, or cooking food grown in Thunder Bay.
“People want to support local food, but they don’t always know where to go, so this online local food directory has everything you need to know about local food, because we know when we spend funds locally through local producers, and processors, and farms, and retailers, and restaurants, that a lot of those funds stay local,” explains Food Strategy Coordinator Karen Kerk. “For every dollar you spend at a local farm, means that six dollars gets reinvested into our local economy.”
The first video launched features chef Nikos Mantis barbecuing veal rib steaks and bok choy while whipping up a compound butter with green garlic and tossing a salad with sheep’s feta and the first of this year’s local strawberries.
Kerk goes on to say, “Our background research is to go an visit the farms and do some profilers on the producers and the ingredients, just to really share with everyone in our area just how extensive our local food scene is.”
The farms being visited are within 100 kilometers of the city.
