Oakfield Beach is temporarily closed to swimming and other recreational use after officials detected potential signs of cyanobacteria.

Some types of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, can produce toxins that pose health risks to people and pets.

These blooms tend to appear in warm, calm freshwater conditions.

Residents are asked to avoid contact with the water, keep pets on a leash, and not consume fish or water from the lake.

Symptoms from exposure may include skin irritation, sore throat, red eyes, fever, and stomach upset.

Children and those with weakened immune systems are especially at risk.

Testing is underway to determine whether the algae is producing toxins. If no toxins are found, the beach will reopen.

If toxins are confirmed, further testing will continue until the water meets Health Canada safety guidelines.

The municipality will issue a public update once the beach is safe to use again.
