Premier Doug Ford is in no hurry to implement a mandatory vaccination program for health and education workers.
He’s responding to provincial Liberal Leader Stephen Del Duca’s call for a program like that.
Ford says at least 90 per cent of workers in the health care field have been immunized.
“We just encourage them to get a vaccination,” Ford says. “I just don’t believe in forcing anyone to get a vaccination that doesn’t want it.”
However, the Premier is still pushing everyone who is eligible to get their shot to do so.
Speaking to reporters this past week, Ford added, “I’m up here literally preaching, begging, pleading every single day since the beginning of this pandemic and especially since we have these vaccinations. So, folks please just go and get a vaccination.”
On Sunday, Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted that over nine million Ontarians are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
This comes after Canada’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Theresa Tam said on Friday that new modelling shows Canada could be headed for a fourth wave of cases as provinces reopen, due to the more contagious delta variant.
“As soon as that balance is tipped, and it wouldn’t take very much with a highly transmissible virus, you’re going to see an uptick in cases,” she said at a press conference.
