The fine for starting an illegal fire during wildfire season is going up to $25,000.
With Victoria Day weekend on the horizon, the province announced the fine is effective for those who violate the daily burn ban.
Premier Tim Houston says this will make sure people pause and check the BurnSafe map each day at 2 p.m.
He says they want to avoid having a season like last year.
The daily burn restrictions also now apply for open fires at campgrounds.
Provincial parks are opening this weekend.
A victim surcharge and HST also apply for violating the ban, meaning the total fine would be over $28,800.
Devices such as gas stoves and charcoal briquette barbeques can be used any time, following manufacturers’ instructions.
