There were a lot of traffic headaches for those travelling from west to east in Saint John on Monday morning.

New Brunswick Southern Railway (NBSR) was replacing a rail crossing along Chesley Drive at Ocean Steel.

However, the work was not completed on time, according to the city’s mayor, which led to lots of traffic issues.

“New Brunswick Southern Railway was working on a project to re-establish their rail crossing on Chesley Drive at Ocean Steel under the condition the road would be re-opened by 7AM this morning,” Mayor Donna Reardon said in a statement on social media.

Combined with the ongoing Harbour Bridge construction, traffic was backed up all over the west side, including along Route 1, Bridge Road, Main Street West, and Manawagonish Road.

Reardon said she understands that many people are rightfully upset over the “significant traffic delays” on the west side.

“It is evident the conditions of the project were not met and we recognize the impact that had on many of you,” she said.

“NBSR was responsible for project planning and execution, including communication to the community and stakeholders such as the city.”

Reardon went on to say that the city had reached out to the company to learn more about the project delays.

A spokesperson for New Brunswick Southern Railway directed our request for comment to Ocean Steel, saying they were in charge of the work.

In a statement, Ocean Steel said crews worked diligently over the weekend to ensure the work was completed by 7 a.m. Monday.

“Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, this goal was not met, and the road was closed until approximately 11:00 a.m. today,” said the statement.

“We understand this caused significant disruption, and we sincerely apologize to the travelling public and members of our community for causing this inconvenience.”
