A request to re-examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 16 indigenous individuals is in the hands of the Office Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) and the Thunder Bay Police Services Board (TBPSB).

Brian Gray, a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Attorney General, confirmed Tuesday that the request has been delivered from the Executive Governance Committee.

The committee previously made the call to re-investigate the passing of nine Indigenous people following the release of the Broken Trust: Indigenous People and the Thunder Bay Police Service report.

The cases happened between 2006 and 2019 with the youngest person being two months old and the oldest being 61 years old.

Gray noted that the ministry is considering the request and will determine the appropriate next steps, including notification of families at the appropriate time and in consultation with the police service and victim services.
