Cairo got a lot of response to the question of which stores you’d like to see come back and Zellers was the popular choice. That got me to thinking about one of my favourite stores, Consumers Distributing. It was described as internet shopping before the internet, and if they had innovated and went online they could have been what Amazon is today. Exactly 25 years ago the store went out of business. Remember you would go to the store to find the item you wanted in their catalog, then mark down the number, take it to the clerk, who would go to the wondrous warehouse in the back, and come out with your product. Consumers were involved with almost everything from jewelry to toys, furniture and electronics, and remember the TV ads.
