Food banks and First Nation communities will get more fresh and frozen food thanks to a $200,000 donation to the Regional Food Distribution Association.

This is the second year that Ontario Power Generation has donated to the RFDA for COVID-19 relief.

RFDA Executive Director Volker Kromm is happy to accept the support.

Three-quarters of the money will be used to send food to the 20 First Nations that OPG serves, while the rest will let the organization buy two electric refrigerator units.

“That will allow us to freeze and maintain much more healthy food,” Kromm says, adding the organization has been relying on diesel-powered units and renting freezer space.

“That will really help us move more fresh and frozen protein and vegetables, so it’s a great move for us. In the end, we’ll be able to serve all those communities on an ongoing basis while reducing our costs, so we’re really pleased,” he points out.

Kromm says the freezers will save the RFDA $25,000 each year in operating costs.
