The Serious Incident Response team has been called in to investigate an incident involving Saint John Police.

An intoxicated man who appeared agitated was arrested at 10:55 pm on April 13 at a business on Portland Street for causing a disturbance in a public place.

The man allegedly suffered a non-life-threatening injury during a dispute with the arresting officers as he was being put into the holding cell at the Saint John Police detention facility.

The man was taken to hospital where he was treated and then released.

The officers remain on active duty as the SiRT investigation is underway.

“The Saint John Police considers incidents involving the use of force serious and we continue to hold our members to the highest standard of accountability in this respect,” says Chief R.M. Bruce.

SiRT is an investigative agency, independent of the police, whose mandate is to investigate matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault, domestic violence or other matters of significant public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer.
