Canada will be hit with a 25 per cent tariff on nearly all exports to the United States starting on Tuesday.

Senior Canadian government sources have confirmed the details to a number of major news outlets.

Energy products coming from Canada will face a smaller 10 per cent tariff, according to the reports.

Sources said the tariffs would continue until President Donald Trump is satisfied Canada has done enough to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.

Federal officials are expected to announce Canada’s response to the tariffs later in the day Saturday.

On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised a “purposeful, forceful but reasonable immediate response” to any tariffs.

“It’s not what we want, but if he moves forward, we will also act,” Trudeau told reporters.

“I won’t sugarcoat it — our nation could be facing difficult times in the coming days and weeks.

“I know Canadians might be anxious and worried, but I want them to know the federal government, and indeed all orders of government, have their backs.”

More to come.
