A change could be coming ahead of the 2022 Municipal Election.

Council will look Monday at possibly approving a standalone by-law to regulate signs for all elections.

The administration, in its submission to council, said that the current Sign By-law 135-1992 does not specifically address signage used in an election.

Staff report that other municipalities have also adopted provisions in their sign by-laws or have standalone by-laws to manage election signage.

The standalone by-law would include provisions under the Provincial Offences Act which would allow the City to charge the sign owner (or other person) with an offence where compliance cannot be achieved and also establish an out-of-court set-fine system.

Right now signs can’t be put in locations that interfere with the safe movement and visibility of vehicles and people as well as in or on voting locations.

The majority of the complaints that the city gets about signage is one that is placed on public property.

The new standalone by-law is scheduled to be approved by Council to allow its use for the 2022 Municipal and School Board Election.

Election Day is Monday, October 24th.
