This weekend on the Retro Lounge, brought to you by Backstage, Thunder Bay’s newest music and accessory store. I go back to the early years of the 1980s with hits from Musical Youth, Prince, Rush, a return for David Bowie, REO Speedwagon scores their first hit album. Music was changing with many new bands emerging from England like the Pretenders, Spandau Ballet, The Fixx and more; Vancouver band Loverboy had a huge debut, as well as Corey Hart and April Wine ended up as the first Canadian band played on MTV. Cyndi Lauper exploded with her first solo release, and number one hits continued for Air Supply, J. Geils Band and the Culture Club. The 80s witnessed Canadian hero Terry Fox, who set out on a life-changing run, and cassettes outsold vinyl thanks to the Walkman and home taping.
Many were making mixtapes for friends. Did you make yours and what were the songs you had to have on them?
The Retro Lounge, Sunday nights at 6 on 99.9 The Bay.
